Anna Homler, 1948 Los Angeles

Anna Homler only has one New Music America appearance and that was as part of David Moss’s quintet of vocalists, Direct Sound. It was there where I got to meet her and thanks to that chance encounter, she turned out to be one of the only people I knew when traveling to France to take part in the Musique/Action festival of 1995, where she was performing.
So I got to see the full performance (more on that on the November 7 post) sort of like Romeo looking down upon Juliet but in a less tragic way, and we’re both lucky that we can hear her solo The Physician from a CBC broadcast radio capture:
We’re also lucky that there exists a recording of Direct Sound with a different quintet formation, but which includes a different version of The Physician as well as two other of Anna’s tracks:

There is no recording of a finished Ludi (this was described as a opera in progress) but the work Lux which was featured in the press clippings has appeared on a 2006 recording and it was the work by Deschênes which preceded this one.
