June 9 - NMA birthday - AMY DENIO
This is where you start: Spoot Records, Amy Denio’s label, has so many releases to choose from, you might start thinking there’s more than one Amy!

2024 gd note: though I’m only really going to put an effort in finding more information about stuff and people of the 1980s, once in a while I hope to do a bit of news-type sleuthing and hopefully be able to update many of the activities of New Music America Alumni. Amy, on the other hand, needs to be constantly watched in order to keep up, and she’s been busy…

===================================
Amy performed with two ensembles at New Music America, in 1989 with Curlew and in 1990 with the Tone Dogs.

All Curlew videos are from cuneiform records from y2b account, except the last one
Gimmie from Paradise (1996)
Call from Mercury (2003)
But most of all, this was labeled as “Knitting Factory 1991” but was it actually the NMANYC performance in 1989? (released in 2010)…

gd - My press kit notes and attempts at translation:
With a resolutely populist approach that defies any kind of categorization, Tone Dogs offer us a rock filled with laughter and sarcasm. They distinguish themselves, among other ways, by their polyrhythms and they incorporate in their music melodic and harmonic directness that makes them one of the most original ensembles today.

Amy’s youtube also has videos featuring the ensembles she’s been touring with recently: the Tiptons (aka The Billy Tipton Memorial Saxophone Quartet) and Kultur Shock.

A recording (made in Amy’s driveway!) around the time of the Montreal performance (y2b user Suha Önder):
Before closing, I make mention of this delightful series of pandemic improvisations from home, broadcasts made every week, inviting all of us to come and improvise with her! (She was a direct influence on my “randomiser” series - gd)
