Of course, as an original member of Sonic Youth, Ranaldo was part of the closing day festivities of the Houston 1986 festival; I had actually come up to this right after seeing Ned Sublette and “Blue” Gene Tyranny at Sam Houston Park (same place I was when joining 1.2 million people for the Jean-Michel Jarre + NASA concert as part of the Houston Festival). It was a triple bill, opening with Culturcide (screaming “Death to Exxon” since they were performing in front of the company’s headquarters) and followed by the legendary Brave Combo.
Ranaldo did participate once as a solo artist at the NMAs, and that was during the multi-performer night as PS122 called “The Hearings” in which he presented a track named Echo Canyon which appeared on a Sonic Youth album. …
